Abstract

The present study experimentally investigates the scale-dependent characteristics of shear layers in turbulence subject to axisymmetric expansion. Turbulence is generated by opposed multiple-jet arrays, in which two opposing nearly homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows collide and form an axisymmetric straining field. Two-dimensional, two-component particle image velocimetry is used to measure velocity fields, and shear layers are analyzed with the triple decomposition applied to filtered velocity gradients with filter sizes on the order of times the Kolmogorov scale. Conditional averaging in a local coordinate aligned with shear layers reveals that intense shear is concentrated in layer-like regions. The normalized profile of conditionally averaged shear vorticity is nearly independent of filter size, indicating self-similar shear layers at different scales. The mean velocity jump across the shear layer increases with shear-layer thickness and follows the scaling predicted by Kolmogorov’s second similarity hypothesis. The orientation dependence of shear layers is also examined. Shear layers are less frequently observed with orientations nearly parallel to the expansion direction than to the compression axis, and this tendency becomes more pronounced at larger scales. The normalized velocity jump increases as the layer orientation approaches that parallel to the compression axis, indicating that the velocity fluctuations enhanced by axisymmetric expansion in that direction strengthen the shear. The aspect ratio becomes larger for layers nearly perpendicular to the compression axis, suggesting that the imposed strain flattens shear layers depending on their alignment. These results indicate that the anisotropy of shear-layer characteristics induced by axisymmetric expansion becomes more evident at larger scales.
